A very religious man enters a church and approaches a statue of St. Paul raised up on a pillar at the side wall. He prays that if the saint would double the money he was carrying in his pocket then he would immediately donate $2 to the church collection box at the altar. His prayers are immediately answered and he deposits $2 into the collection box. He requests the same deal with two further saints and in both cases his prayers are answered and in both cases he sub-sequently deposits $2 in the collection box. Upon his exit from the church the young man checks his pocket only to discover that he has no money left. How much money did he have in his pocket when he entered the church?

He enters the church with $1.75 in his pocket. The first saint doubles this to $3.50 and he donates $2 of this to the church. He approaches the second saint with $1.50 in his pocket and this is subsequently doubled to $3.00. He donates $2 of this to the church and approaches the thirdsaint with $1 in his pocket. The third saint doubles this to $2 and this is donated to the church leaving the young man with no money.
