In the 1902 a dam, that was a miracle of engineering of the time, was built on the Nile River in Egypt. It took its name from a nearby town, which also gave its name to a later dam.

  • The dam, 580 miles south of Cairo, was completed after four years of construction. The Aswan High Dam, built upstream from the old dam, came into operation in 1968. The lake behind it is Lake Nasser. The old dam became known as the Aswan Low Dam.
