  • DeGaulle, born in 1890, was one of Europe's most popular leaders. His career began during World War I, and he was named a brigadier general in Word War II. He is known for instituting the "Fifth Republic" and served as its first president from 1959 until his resignation in 1969. He died of a heart attack one year later, at the age of 79.
