Hidden Object Games is yet another online gaming niche that is showing up all over the internet right now. The start of this niche can be traced back to the eighties, nineties, or maybe even decades earlier. Every kind of person, young and old, would test their abilities to seek out specific items or people in a crowded scene full of all kinds of silly little characters who were in the midst of some sort of confusion or catastrophe. Moving forward, it concentrated on children as its main audience with merchandisers filling the shelves of bookstores with popular characters from a child’s favorite movie or TV series. However, it recently happened that most people have started finding what they want straight from their web browser where virtually anything is possible, and adults (especially middle aged women) are back in the hunt for Hidden Object Games that feature content that is more in line with their interests. When this happened, the niche evolved and became popularly known as Hidden Object Games and/or Difference Games.

Difference Games are mentioned above as being the same or at least very similar to Hidden Object Games. The object here is to look at two very detailed pictures on a split screen view and search each to see what makes them distinct from one another. These can be paintings, illustrations, or what appears to be drawings that you would find in love notes. The player is usually being timed as they peruse the screen for an exact number of discrepancies. Some have the player follow a plot as they go from scene to scene in an attempt to keep it interesting as though they were actually accomplishing something by finding where they differ. So one could surmise that Difference Games are a subcategory of Hidden Object Games of the current niche. At any rate, if you find what you’ve just read interesting and you’d like to try your hand at some of these games, feel free to hop on your favorite search engine and find out what you’ve been missing!

Hidden Object Games, in general, cater toward casual players who like to spend their free time by their computers relaxing with something a rather feminine with soft music in the background. The content usually includes quiet or mysterious places that you search for household items or other nicknacks. These places could be libraries, attics, ancient ruins, gardens, jungles, or places like the lost city of Atlantis. You then have a catalog of what to look for, and once you find them, you click on them to take them off the list. The characters often need to find certain items to escape a maze or search out clues to solve a mystery or crime of some sort.

The above argument that this niche is made up of mostly middle aged women can be proven by the fact that the majority of the content of these games includes themes that women would most likely find appealing. While there are exceptions to these kinds of themes, most emphasize country homes, romance, fantasy, clothing stores, and women defined by bold or exotic roles. If developers had sought out men on the other hand, the exceptions to the rule like violent themes, suspense, and nonsensical humor would more likely outnumber these outlined above.
